A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck the northern foothills of the Himalayas near Tibet’s revered cities on Tuesday, resulting in at least 53 deaths and over 60 injuries.

The earthquake, which occurred at 9:05 a.m. (0105 GMT), had its epicenter in Tingri, a rural county near the Everest region. The tremors were felt in neighboring countries, including Nepal, Bhutan, and India, particularly across Delhi-NCR and parts of North India like Bihar. The earthquake’s depth was 10 km (6.2 miles), as reported by the China Earthquake Networks Center. CCTV reported that the Tibetan region had suffered at least 53 fatalities. The tremors also reached Nepal, with a 7.1 magnitude quake earlier in the day sending shockwaves throughout North India. The epicenter of the earthquake was located 93 km northeast of Lobuche, near the Nepal-Tibet border. This area lies where the India and Eurasian plates converge, causing Himalayan uplifts that impact the heights of the world’s tallest peaks. The 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck Dingri County, close to the Nepal border, at 9:05 a.m. (0105 GMT). CCTV reported that several communities within 5 km (3 miles) of the epicenter, around 380 km (240 miles) from Tibet’s capital, Lhasa, were affected. The region has experienced 10 earthquakes of magnitude 6 or greater over the past century. This was the most powerful quake recorded in the area in the last five years. In 2015, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake in Nepal caused nearly 9,000 deaths and over 22,000 injuries, destroying more than half a million homes. Nepal lies on a major tectonic fault line where the Indian plate pushes into the Eurasian plate.
