Travel content creator Sharanya Iyer revealed that she spent over ₹50 lakh in the past year, marking a significant departure from her previous habit of saving money obsessively.

With over half a million followers on Instagram, Sharanya spent the majority of her money traveling to various countries.

In a video shared on Instagram, she mentioned visiting more than six countries in 2024, with flights alone costing her ₹5 lakh. The bulk of her expenses went towards accommodation and activities, though she also spent ₹22 lakh on a new Hyundai car and ₹5 lakh on medical costs.

Sharanya explained that her shift in spending habits was influenced by her dad and friends, who encouraged her to embrace spending rather than just saving. She expressed that this change brought her joy and a sense of security, especially during a challenging year. She also mentioned that not everyone would agree with her approach but it was a significant step for her.

In her video, Sharanya detailed her travel expenses, including ₹1 lakh for trips to Laos and Thailand, ₹1.5 lakh in Madeira, ₹8 lakh for a trip to South Africa with her parents, and ₹3 lakh in Greenland. Her three visits to Iceland cost ₹2.5 lakh, and her summer in Europe cost ₹60,000, partly offset by winning ₹40,000 at a casino. Additionally, she spent ₹5 lakh on flights worldwide and excluded costs for food, daily expenses, and shopping from her calculations.

Sharanya’s video went viral, gaining 1.3 million views and sparking numerous comments. Many users were curious about her source of income, with one person writing, “What is your source of income? Lucky that you can afford this.” Some commenters also expressed surprise at her spending habits, while others cautioned against spending all income on travel at a young age. In response, Sharanya explained that some of her Iceland trips were sponsored and that she did not include flight costs in her calculation.
